On arrival:

Please read the water and electricity meters (in the cellar) and send the values to me (see contact data above): unexpected water consumption since the previous visit would indicate a leak somewhere, unexpected electricity usage would indicate that the frost monitor in the cellar or the ventilator is defect.

To switch on the water, open the valves before and after the meter (see picture below). If you are the first visitor in the year, you will notice that all taps are open. This is correct; just shut them. For hot water, screw in the three fuses for the water heater. They are the first one from the left in each row in the fuse box.

On departure:

Please read the water and electricity meters and send the values to me (see contact data above) so that I will be able to see if there is any unexpected consumption when the next visitor comes. And if you’re the last visitor for the year, those will be the values I have to report to the suppliers.

Loosen the fuses for the water heater; they don’t have to be screwed out completely, it’s enough to just loosen them. Close the valves before and after the water meter. Screw them tight! A small leak can do a lot of damage.

If it’s winter (roughly November to February), or you can expect to be the last visitor for the year, you must also empty the waterpipes: when you have shut off the water, open all taps, flush the toilet and place a bucket under the little valve under the waterpipes in the cellar (rightmost in the picture below). Open it and wait for the water to flow out (which can take a minute or two). Shut the valve when you’re finished! Empty the bucket in the woods or the toilet and then hang it on the end of the drain trough to catch condensing water from the pipes during the coming months. Put a little anti freeze into all the drains and the toilet. You don’t need a lot, it doesn’t get very cold inside the house in winter, but a bit is necessary: we have experienced a burst toilet! There’s a cannister with antifreeze in the shed.

During your stay:

The yellow sack (in the shed) is for recyclable waste; when it gets full, empty it into the yellow bin in the wood down near the parking place. The yellow bin is emptied once a month; place it on the footpath with the wheels on the woodside (i.e. away from the road) the evening before and bring it back next day.
The rubbish bin (next to the yellow bin) is for other waste. Garbage disposal is every other week. Place the bin on the footpath the evening before (wheels on the woodside) and bring it back the next day.
The dates for 2026 can be found here. You can always find the current disposal dates on the internet at https://www.gfa-lueneburg.de/service/abfuhrkalender.html: select Tosterglope as place (“Ort”), Nahrendorfer Str. (Ventschau) as street (“Straße”) and 25A as number (“Hausnummer”). Only residual waste (“Restmüll”) and yellow bin (“Gelber Tonne”) are relevant for us.

The ventilator is switched on automatically at 1 a.m. (in summer, midnight in winter) and off 6 hours later. If the noise disturbs you, please DON’T meddle with the timer in the power socket! There’s a switch in the cable going up the wall that you can use to switch it off. Please remember to switch it back on again when you leave.
